The Argonaut was completed in 1928 as a specialized minelaying submarine. She was very large and therefore unusually habitable for a submarine. However, she was slow and quite unmaneuverable and took seemingly forever to dive.
Argonaut
was off Wake
on 7 December 1941. She was lost off New Britain on 10 January 1943 to
a depth charge attack that
was witnessed by American aircraft. Fife's
decision to send this clumsy and ancient vessel on a war patrol remains
controversial.
