Mano commanded 41 Division under 18 Army at Wewak in June 1943. His division was isolated along with most of the rest of 18 Army by MacArthur's landings at Aitape and Hollandia in March 1944. He gradually retreated to the northwest under pressure from Australian troops, reaching Winge by the time of the surrender.
Mano's division participated in the Battle of the Driniumor River, where a perceived slight to Mano by the army commander, Adachi, motivated Mano's officers to attempt to restore his honor with a suicidal attack that was cut to pieces by superior American firepower.
