Gold was discovered in
the Rosebery-Read district (145.51E
41.75S) in 1893 and the large zinc ore body was discovered a
year later. However, the remote location in rugged, heavily forested
western Tasmania prevented
large-scale extraction until 1936. Production was about 59,000
tons of lead and 42,000 tons of
zinc per year during the war. Copper,
silver, and gold are also found in the area.
