Ajmer (74.64E 26.45N) was founded ca. 1100 as a fortress oasis in the Rajputana Desert of western India. Its strategic location made it an important center of trade. Mayo College was founded here in 1874. The population in 1941 was somewhere in the neighborhood of 160,000.
