Alma Ata (76.95E 43.25N) was founded in 1854 and was the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. It received much of the heavy industry evacuated from western Russia in 1941, which was powered from local hydroelectric facilities. The climate of Alma Ata is typical of central Asia: hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and dry most of the year, with a relatively wet spring.
