Changchow (Zhangzhou; 119.967E 31.776N) was an important inland port on the Grand Canal until the coming of the railroad. There was an airfield nearby.
The city was abandoned to the Japanese in May 1938, but U.S. Navy coast watchers were stationed in the hinterland to provide weather reports and report on Japanese shipping movements.
