Cochin (Kochi; 76.28E 9.97N) is a major port in southwest India. The port has been a center of trade since at least the 4th century BCE, when it exported pepper to Greece. Spice exports ballooned in the first century of the Roman Empire, when 120 ships a year were dispatched from Egypt to bring pepper from Cochin.
The Royal Indian Navy had a small base here during the
war.
