Hawker was built on the ruins of Sopwith Aviation Company in 1930
and renamed Hawker Aircraft Ltd. in 1933. The company merged with
Armstrong in 1935 to become Hawker Siddeley Ltd.
Aircraft designed by Hawker included the Hurricane. Aircraft engines continued to be designed and manufactured under the Armstrong name, including the Tiger and the Cheetah, which though old designs were still in use in a small number of obsolescent aircraft when war broke out in the Pacific.
