Himeji

Himeji (134.688E 34.851N) is located in Hyogo Prefecture on the Inland Sea. It is located in a heavily industrialized area specializing in steel production, textiles, shipbuilding, and chemicals.

The city had a population in 1945 of 104,250 persons and was the home district for 10 Division. When war broke out, 54 Division was based here.

The nearby Seitetsu Steel Mill was one of the largest in Japan and would later make use of American prisoners of war.

The plant was destroyed in a daylight B-29 raid on 22 June 1945. The city as a whole was subject to incendiary attack on 3 July 1945, which destroyed 63.3% or 1.216 square miles (3.15 km2) of the city.
