Kiangsu (Jiangsu) is a province of eastern China, located on the coast between Shantung Peninsula on the north and Chekiang on the south. With its low relief, the province is a land of lakes and rivers that includes the lower Yangtze River valley. Its ancient boundaries took in the cities of Hsuchow; Nanking, which was the Kuomintang capital prior to its occupation by the Japanese; and the great metropolis of Shanghai. However, Shanghai had become an independent municipality in 1927. Kiangsu thus was one of the most important and prosperous provinces of China.
The province was overrun by the Japanese early in the Sino-Japanese War that preceded the Pacific War.
