Kweichow (Guizhou) is a province of southern China. The province is located mostly on a high plateau with more rugged terrain to the northwest. The provincial capital is Kweiyang. The climate is humid subtropical.
The province was settled relatively late in China's history and was
one of the poorest provinces in the country. Major agricultural
products included timber and tobacco. Although the province has some mineral resources, these were largely undeveloped in 1941.
The province was largely untouched by war until 1944, when Kweiyang became a major objective of the Japanese Ichi-go offensive. Japanese troops entered the province on 28 November 1944.
