Tontouta (166.212E 22.014S) was the site of the largest airfield in New Caledonia, located some 33 miles (53  km) north of Noumea. The airfield had two runways operational when war broke out in the Pacific, and it was heavily garrisoned by what would later become the Americal Division. The runways were expanded and resurfaced, using abundant nickel mining tailings as fill.
