Alice Springs (133.883E
23.700S) is located near the geographic center of Australia. In 1941 it was the
railhead
for traffic from the more populous southeastern regions of the
continent to points north. A road suitable for heavy vehicular traffic
was built between Alice Springs and Darwin
early in the war.
