"Tubby" Allen commanded the Australian 7 Division at the time of the Kokoda campaign. A plump, amiable officer whose watchword was "Keep smiling," he led the retreat from Kokoda to Imita Ridge, where he told one of his brigadiers, "There won't be any withdrawal from the Imita position, Ken. You'll die there if necessary. You understand that?"
Allen was relieved of command on 27 October 1942 after his advancing troops were stopped by well-entrenched Japanese troops at Oiva. Ironically, he was relieved just as his troops were breaking into Oiva and turning the Japanese retreat into a rout.
