Amchitka is located in the Central Aleutians, 90 miles east of Kiska. It is a narrow island some 50 miles (80 km) long from northwest to southeast. Its chief anchorage, at Constantine Bay (179.289E 51.394N), was completely undeveloped in 1941. However, while the northwest half of the island is mountainous, the southwest half is a plateau whose flat terrain was well suited for airfields.
American troops accordingly arrived on 12 January 1943 and began base development.
