"Bustling Bill" Barstow commanded 9
Indian Division in Malaya when
war broke
out. He joined Heath in
unsuccessfully urging a withdrawal from east Malaya. He was killed in a
Japanese ambush on 28 January 1942
when he went forward to investigate the unauthorized demolition of a
bridge and of the accompanying telephone lines.
