Calgary (114.06W 51.05N) was founded in 1875 as a Canadian Mounted Police post. The railway arrived in 1883 and encouraged growth, with the city being incorporated in 1893. Oil was discovered in nearby Turner Valley (114.267W 50.68N) in 1914, making Calgary the petroleum center of Canada.
