Christchurch (172.617E, 43.533S) is the largest city of the south island of New Zealand. It was first settled by Europeans in 1850 and serves a large agricultural hinterland. The city has no natural harbor and receives shipping through Lyttleton Harbor (172.719E 43.605N) to the southeast.
In late 1941 Christchurch was the headquarters of
New Zealand's Southern
Military District, with approximately seven battalions of militia in the region.
