Feng Tai (116.30E
39.83N) was the location of an important Japanese Army base southwest of Peiping. The Japanese were
allowed to station one battalion
here after May 1936, and this clashed with local Chinese troops on 18 September
1936. Although the incident was quickly settled, the Japanese
heavily garrisoned the town, and the incident is regarded as
setting the stage for the more disastrous Marco Polo Bridge
Incident that
led to war in China.
