Hachijo Jima

Digital relief map of Hachijo Jima

Hachijo Jima (139.78E 33.12N) is an island in the northern Izut Shoto group of the Nanpo Shoto chain. The island is about 8 miles (13 km) long and has two peaks, Nishi (2802 ' or 854 m) on the northwest side of the island and Higashiyama (2230' or 680 m) on the southeast side, with relatively flat ground in the saddle between them. A tiny port was located on the southwest coast of the saddle.

Nishi is a dormant volcano that last erupted in 1606. It is also a very young volcano, estimated to have emerged from the ocean less than 10,000 years ago.

By February 1945 there was an airstrip here that was used to stage air raids against the Allied forces off Iwo Jima
