Although these guns made up the original main battery of several early Japanese heavy cruiser classes, they were gradually replaced with the more powerful Mark 2 gun. By 1941 they were still present only on the Akagi
and Kaga
in stern casemates. Neither ship survived long enough for
these useless
weapons to be removed, as was done with their counterparts on the Saratoga.
