Jehol (Rehe) was a province of northern China north of the Great Wall. The southern half of the province is mountainous but included the provincial capital of Chengde. The northwestern border is also mountainous, but the northeastern part of the province opens onto the Manchurian plain. The province was created by the Kuomintang in 1923 but occupied by the Japanese in early 1933. The province was dissolved in 1955.
The province was originally peopled by ethnic Mongols, but these were
gradually displaced by Han Chinese in the early 19th century. The
province remained poorly developed into the time of the Pacific
War.
