Kapingamarangi (154.76E 1.06S) is a small atoll, some 7 miles (11) km across, in the Caroline Islands. It is the southernmost of the Carolines. The Japanese established a seaplane refueling base here, which was subject to some desultory raids by Australian Hudsons out of Rabaul prior to the Japanese seizure of New Britain in January 1942.
