Lloyd commanded 14 Indian
Division
in the first Arakan campaign. He was
relieved by Irwin for failing to repel the Japanese
counterattack of March 1943, when he had been put in the nearly impossible position of trying to control nine brigades with only a division
headquarters. He was subsequently sent to Cyprus to take command of
the exhausted 10 Indian Division as it absorbed replacements and trained.
