Madurai (78.129E
9.916N) is an ancient city,
dating back at least to the 5th century B.C. It is famous for the
Great Temple, a fine example of southern Indian Hindu architecture. The city
produces muslin and silk textiles and tea, coffee, and cardamom.
The population was 358,000 in 1950.
