Mangareva (134.967W 23.118S) is a high atoll with a good anchorage located at the southeastern edge of the Tuamotu Archipelago. It played a role in some prewar contingency plans of the United States Navy, as a rendezvous for ships coming from the Atlantic fleet. Mangareva is also the cradle of Polynesian Catholicism and a major producer of pearls. The main village of Rikitea includes St. Michael’s Cathedral.
