McCormick was born into a Navy family and graduated with
distinction from the Naval Academy in 1915. He became an expert in
logistics, becoming the
chief advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on logistical planning. He
then commanded Battleship Division
3 during the Okinawa
campaign.
