Minami-daito (131.264E
25.847N) is an island some 250 miles (400 km) southeast of the Ryukyus. The island and its near neighbor to the northeast, Kita-daito, form an isolated group, with no other land nearby. Minami-daito itself is just four miles (6 km) across, and is bowl-shaped with a high rim around a shallower marshy interior. Here there was modest sugar production.
The Japanese Navy constructed an airstrip on the eastern rim of the island in September 1934. This was struck by carrier aircraft during the Okinawa campaign.
