Minakami commanded
the infantry group of 56 Division in Burma in 1944. He held Myitkyina town against Merrill's Marauders
and Chinese troops for 76 days
in spite of a 15:1 disadvantage in numbers. During this time he
was promoted two grades to full General, with the clear
implication that he was expected to fight to the death. He was
finally forced to order a retreat
across the Irrawady,
on 1-3 August 1944, but chose to commit suicide by shooting himself on
the midstream island of Nonthalon.
