Miyako Retto (125.296E 24.782N) is an island group in the southern Ryukyus. The main island, Miyako Jima, was about 18 miles (29 km) along its northeast coast. The smaller islands of Shimoji and Irabu to the west were separated by a very narrow, shallow channel. An airfield was constructed at Nobara on Miyako Jima in June 1943 and a significant garrison was in place by 1945.
Plans had been made to invade the group with III Amphibious Corps after Okinawa was secured, but these were canceled when the Okinawa operation became prolonged.
