Napa (122.28W
38.30N) is a pleasant area of vineyards located on the Napa River
north of San Francisco Bay.
During the Second World War, Basalt Rock Company, a sand and gravel
firm, rapidly converted to small ship construction for the Maritime Commission.
Because of the limited channel depth of the Napa River, ships
constructed here were limited to less than 2000 tons displacement.
