Ninghsien

Ninghsien (Ningbo; 121.551E 29.865N) was founded in the 8th century on the west bank of the Yung River in Chekiang province, China. The river is not easily navigable and the city never became an important port. However, a local fishing fleet was based at Chunhai at the mouth of the Yung.

The city had an airstrip which staged a Chinese reconnaissance flight to Japan on 19 May 1938 that dropped leaflets over a number of cities in Kyushu. The Japanese in turn are alleged to have dropped ceramic containers with plague-carrying fleas on the city in November 1940. By the time war broke out in the Pacific, the Japanese had occupied the city.
