when war broke out in the Pacific. He was acting commander of 11
Indian
Division in from 24 December 1941. Although he initially
made a good impression, he was held responsible for the disaster
at Slim River and was returned to command of his brigade on 12 January. He was
killed at sea during the
evacuation of Singapore.
