Sakaguchi Shizuo was commissioned an
infantry officer in
1910 and commanded the infantry group of the newly raised 56 Division, built around 56 Brigade, when war
broke out in the Pacific. The Sakaguchi Detachment subsequently participated in the capture of Davao, Jolo, Tarakan, Balikpapan, and Banjermasin. He was promoted to lieutenant
general and command of 55 Depot
Division in June
1943. In August 1944, he became
commander of
65 Division but was retired in
April 1945.
Following the capture of Balikpapan, the entire European population of the town was massacred in retaliation for the demolition of the oil wells. It is unclear whether Sakaguchi was ever brought to account for this atrocity.
