Shaoyang (111.457E
27.235N), located about 110 miles (180 km) southwest of Changsha, was the center of a coal
mining district producing about
three million tons of coal per year in 1941. The town was also known as
Paoching (Baojing) and had been a population center for at least 2500
years.
