Shichida Ichiro was commissioned an infantry officer in 1908. A graduate of the War College, he was superintendent of the Military Preparatory Academy at the outbreak of war. He was appointed commander of the Mongolia Garrison Army in March 1942 and of 2 Army in May 1943. Returning to Tokyo in March 1944, he retired in April 1945 but was recalled to command 56 Army almost at once.
