Sumiyoshi commanded the artillery group of 17 Army on Guadalcanal. His 150mm howitzers soon were named "Pistol Pete" by the Marines subject to their harrassing fire. Sumiyoshi was ordered to pin down the Marines on the western perimeter of Henderson Field during the offensive of 23-25 October 1942. Word that the attack had been postponed failed to reach him, he attacked a day early, and his attack was repulsed with heavy losses. Sumiyoshi did succeed in pulling American forces off the south perimeter, where other units of 17 Army attacked the next two nights.
