Surat (72.848E
21.169N) is a port and rail head in western India, about 160 miles (260 km)
north of Bombay. The port was
an important waypoint for pilgrims
to Mecca in Mughal times, was the location of a battle between English and Portuguese naval forces in
1612, and was one of the first English footholds in India.
However, the port was later overshadowed by Bombay.
