Tahiti (149.4W
17.6S) was the heart of French
Polynesia, located about 2900 miles (4700 km) south and slightly east of Oahu and about 2600 miles (4200 km) northeast of New Zealand. A high, mountainous island, with its capital and chief port at Papeete,
Tahiti was far enough from Japan
that it never came under serious threat during the war.
