Thazi (96.06E
20.85N) was an important rail junction
in upper Burma
in 1941. There was a spur from here to Meiktila, and to the east the railroad ascended to the Shan Plateau.
The battle of Meiktila in March 1945 was fought largely for control of the rail line at Thazi. The failure of the Japanese to clear the rail line was largely responsible for the collapse of Burma Area Army, making possible the British drive on Rangoon.
