"Gertie" Tuker commanded 34 Indian Division when war broke out in the Pacific. Transferred to North Africa in 1942, he commanded Indian troops in North Africa and at the battle of Cassino in Italy. He was reposted to the Far East to take command of IV Indian Corps in July 1945, just as the war was winding down.
