Vickers was one of the oldest engineering firms in
Britain, dating back to 1828. It expanded into aircraft
manufacture in 1811, merged with Armstrong Whitworth in 1927, and
acquired Supermarine in
1928. However, Supermarine retained considerable autonomy and
continued designing and manufacturing aircraft under its old name.
Aircraft manufactured under the Vickers name that saw
service in the Pacific War included the Vildebeeste
and Wellington.
