Vigan (120.387E
17.621N) was the location of a primitive airstrip on northwest Luzon, on the east shore of Lingayen Gulf. The town was the capital of Ilocos Sur Province, and it had a tiny port at Pandan.
The airstrip was seized by Japanese troops of 3/2 Formosa Regiment landed by 2 Surprise Attack Force on 10 December 1941. The attack force lost a minesweeper and a transport to American air attack, but there was negligible opposition ashore. Elements of 5 Air Division moved to the airfield almost at once.
