Yokkaichi (136.656E
34.983N) was an important regional port
southwest of Nagoya. The population
of 102,000 in 1944 was packed into the central 1.5 square miles of the
city, which hosted the largest oil
refinery in Japan. The Japanese Army maintained a
secondary airfield here in 1941.
On 17-18 June 1945, the city was bombed by 313
Bombardment Wing, which dropped 567 tons of incendiaries. These
destroyed 60 percent of the city.
