ASD began with a proposal to develop a 3-cm surface search radar for
the TBF Avenger. Development
was slow due to the difficulty of installing a long waveguide to the
antenna nacelle, and the set ended up being used on the PV-1 Ventura. It proved somewhat
unreliable.
Both pilot and bombardier were supplied with a B scope.
