Birdum (133.437E
15.982S) was the southern terminus of the North Australia Railroad,
the "railway to nowhere" that should have connected Darwin to Alice Springs but was not
completed until long after the war. There was a primitive airstrip here when war broke out,
which was improved and become part of the Darwin airbase complex.
