The Bowditch was launched
in Denmark in 1929 as the passenger ship Santa Inez and purchased by the
U.S. Navy in 1940 for conversion to a survey ship. After extensive
survey work in the Atlantic, she transited the
Panama Canal into the Pacific ca. May 1943 and continued her survey
work along the east coast of South America. She arrived at Pearl Harbor
on 6 January 1944 and served the remainder of the war with the Pacific
Fleet.
