Naval History and Heritage Command #NH 84926
In 1941, as today, Bremerton (122.645W 47.558N) was a major naval base, sheltered deep in Puget Sound. Puget Sound Navy Yard was an excellent shipyards capable of repairing ships of any size, with three of the four largest dry docks on the West Coast. An airstrip was located nearby. Bremerton had the distinction of being the closest major base in North America to Japan.
Colorado
was undergoing a refit here at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, and so was
the only battleship of the Pacific
Fleet that was not at least moderately damaged in the attack.
