(98.993E 18.789N) Strategically located near the China/Burma/Thailand junction, Chiengmai is the largest city of northern Thailand. It was founded in the 11th century and was a trade center for teak, rice, cotton, and vegetables. It has a typical continental monsoon climate, with a very dry winter and broiling spring followed by heavy summer and autumn rains.
The Japanese established airbases at Chiengmai with obscene haste following the outbreak of war, suggesting to some historians that important members of the Thai government secretly collaborated with the Japanese prior to the invasion.
