The city of Dacca (90.417E
23.717N) was founded in 1608 by a Mogul
viceroy, Islam Khan. Originally a political center, it soon
became a cultural
and trade center as well. It is noted for its fine, almost
transparent, hand
woven muslins. The population in 1941 was 239,728.
There was an airfield nearby, at Tezgaon (90.382E 23.779N).
